Reflection - Image #2
To create this image, I scanned a hand-painted sheet of glass over a shiny, silvery fabric. I distorted the shapes of both the glass and fabric by slowly moving the pieces perpendicular to the direction of the scan. Through the distorted imagery, I wanted to instill a sense of confusion--sensory overload, in a way. I wanted to emphasize the expression of the painted mask, already exaggerated in such a painful way. I drew out the shape of the blackened mouth, contrasting the negative space with the fabric's grainy, refracted illumination behind. It's a play of the digital age haunting the impressionistic nature of children. As far as successes go, I think my scans achieved a depth of space, even though their dimensions were comparatively flat. I would like to experiment further and improve the communication of my message with more obscure materials.
