Reflection
Masks have been symbolized by various cultures throughout history. They've been used to shield the inner core, to protect the world a gruesome physicality. But they've also been used to captivate the truities of a person; to project the inner values and internal properties that someone may forcibly hide from the world. In this essay of photographs, I took that concept and collaborated it with influences from the early days of the circus. Clown were actors, caricatured under their masks of paint. Using a single model (myself) I expressed the various provocations of inner character through painted plexiglass. The concept being that one face could hold a million characters. I experimented with black and white photography, making rich the contrast between black and white. In the pictures of the masks alone, I played off the basic, childish color palette used in clownish face paint, and accentuated the vibrancy of the overall shots.
